Another Devourment cd?! - 81%

Skullfucked, March 14th, 2008

“Oh my god! Is it a new Devourment cd?! Waking the Cadaver?! No wait… It’s just Disembowled Corpse.” I can almost hear it now… people all over the world getting exited over what APPEARS to be another Devourment cd, but actually turns out to be this. Imagine what Devourment would sound like if all of a sudden they started playing Waking the Cadaver songs, vocals and all, and you have this album dead on.

But, than again, this needn’t detract from the listener’s enjoyment. This is slam death, pure and simple. What this album lacks in technicality and pace, it more than makes up for in guttural crushingness. The vocals on this album are pretty awesome, a mix of the afore mentioned Devourment and Waking the Cadaver, the gurgling grunt this man puts out is enough to turn anyone’s stomach. But, even better, is this mans vocal range. All the way from high pitched pig squeals, down to the lowest gurgling grunts, and everything in between, this man does not fail to be slightly better than average.

The sound of this album is pretty good overall, every instrument is clearly audible, and the murky quality does well to hide the monotony of the instruments. The talent in this band could certainly do with some improvement, but than again this isn’t exactly technical death metal (as the label on the band page says). The guitar work does it’s job, and keeps us entertained, while the pounding of the drums and bass goes on in the background.

Overall, this album is good, but in the way that your favorite soap opera is. Not extremely well put together, or even largely entertaining, but it’s better than most of the shit out there, and it makes good background noise.
