Pretty good first demo!!!!!! - 75%

There is one similarity between the first demo of «Black Abyss» from Malaysia and the Silence Endless one by «Gräfenstein», whose origin is Germany: no introduction, no build-up of the first idea on the release, just an unleashing of a pure black metal attack(*). No mercy is shown by the south-east Asian metalheads and each of the compositions comes as a brutal and aggressive black metal thunderstorm. No relief, no pause and certainly no lame keyboards.

The tempo is nearly always on a high level, the guitars form a dense wall of sound and the drums do their best to keep the music going. «Hell Eternal» by Setherial tempo is not reached, but with some effort «Black Abyss» might be able to achieve it. Some may suspect that this Malaysian band approach to play music 'fast as hell' is achieved at the expense of a very simple song-structure. This is not the case. Rather the contrary is the case and the three compositions are not only quite complex but also loaded with breaks.

Generally speaking are too much vocals in the songs bad for the music, because they unnecessarily distract the attention of the listener from the motives and further challenge the instruments for dominance; there are enough examples out there that prove this. In case of «Black Abyss» their impact is not such graven one, because the emphasis of the vocalist keeps the music more interesting and adds some slight amount of insanity or weirdness to it. Even though some slight more power in the vocals might be neat, they already work quite well with the compositions.

If you search for some progressive black metal with neat melody lines, riffs and the like, then this demo will hardly please you. Fans of underground black metal, whose main interest is fast and aggressive music, should get this release. Not only is the production surprisingly good, a lot of bands from the depressive genre should take this as an example on how to do it, «Black Abyss» is already able to write some good and catchy compositions. Perhaps it may be criticized that everything sound too polished, but this only a minor obstacle when it comes to enjoying this piece of music.

Similiar to: Setherial, Impaled Nazarene, Gräfenstein, Infernal, Marduk ... you get the idea.

To be listened to at maximum volume!

(*) well, to be utterly frank, there is one bass-chord at the opening but nothing more.
