Nocturnal - Rites of the Black Mass - 90%

icabod, November 5th, 2003

Nocturnal's "Rites of the Black Mass" is a solid blend of black metal and melodic (but still totally raw and evil) thrash, and anyone who's into bands such as Bathory, Toxic Holocaust, Abigail, Nifelheim, etc, would love this. Despite the raw, digital-sounding production (not that anyone who'd listen to this would care about that!) and somewhat sloppy execution (which only adds to the overall atmosphere and feeling), I'm tempted to almost describe the music is "catchy"...not in a commercial or a trendy way, but the overall songwrititng quality here is tops and Evil Avenger knows how to write soild, evil riffs. I'm not sure how readily available this is, as production was limited to under 500 copies, but if you can find/trade a copy of it, it is essential for any maniac into this style of thrash/bm.
