Nahual - Mysteries of the Cosmic Serpent

Talent is the Truth, not Satan - 20%

Onerazan, July 6th, 2004

This album is a good effort, considering the regular level of the releases of Metal in Peru - i mean: low sound, poor production and worse presentation. In this sense, this album have little to lack of, as it has mostly a good quality standard. Now, if we speak about the music, then there's too few good things to say.

Nahual is not doing an extreme, fast or raw black metal; all of the songs are very slow wich can become so boring when you listen only two themes of them. In other way, they're neither creating slow but dark atmospheres, i think we can say that this album is simply, and terrible, boring. I mean if you have very simple structures in your songs, the best you can do it's inject them with anger and see if something happens. But Nahual compositions are too damn simple to have the privliege to slow down the songs and to expect it wil result in an interesting form of music.

The reason is quite simple, the band is very enthusiastic about satanism and exposing other funny points of view, but you cannot expect to do a good artisitic work by knowing a lot about something your music is about, i mean if you're not a good musician then your music will suck, and don't matter waht you say on your lyircis or what you expose in your interviews. First comes the music, then you can do whatever you want. This important to say in a field like the black metal scene, which is full of "evil" preachers that have nothing to say as artists.
And i'm afraid that this album, and by the interviews by the time it was released, shows that these guys claim to be above metal, the metal scene, above everything cause they claim to be the elite; but, what does it matter when all you want is to hear good music? I donĀ“t care wheter if they're the elite or not, because as musicians they suck, and if they claim Satan to be truth or the real wisdom, i'd rather think that the truth and the best knowledge you can have while doing music is to be good in this matter, be a good musician, and related to this, this album is not worth listening.
