Worship / Stabat Mater - Worship / Stabat Mater

The epitome of Doom Metal - 100%

mutiilator, June 26th, 2004

This split is one of the best, and sickest, collaborations i've ever bore witness to. The unholy union brought two of the genre's best bands together in 2002, and the result birthed a slab of vinyl that will be immortalized by an elite few. The sadistic nature of the music, and the overall depressive overtones both groups boast, raises them out of the masses, and crowns them as Doom Metal deities.

The Worship track is basically an unpolished demo version of one of the songs off their cult release Last Tape/Vinyl/CD Before Doomsday. Any fan of Worship is already familiar with the said song, so i will skip it and focus on Stabat Mater.

Stabat Mater steal this 7'' with their song "Give Them Pain". The title says it all. The music is a mix of Skepticism's funeral-doom style, but mixed with the psychotic pervasiveness of Worship and other extreme doom bands (Khanate, Burning Witch, etc). Slow, mind-numbing music is beaten into the listener's head, and it is all brought together with some of the best growls i've ever heard: thick, echoey and heavy. The mood of the track is extremely dark (as expected with this type of music), but the sampling(?) of a girl being tortured adds a nice touch, and furthers the mental descent of the listener. The music is pretty simplistic, but it's very effective subconciously, and quite mood-altering when it all comes together.

This is some of the sickest music you will ever hear, as it epitomizes Doom Metal in its rawest and most disturbing form. It is truly for those who like their music sadistic and deranged, and who can truly handle the deepest, darkest extremes of Doom Metal. I would KILL to get my hands on a copy of this 7'', but alas...
