Summon - And the Blood Runs Black

Don't sprain your neck headbanging to it!!! - 81%

metalheadIamdead, July 13th, 2004

A beautiful (or should I say “ugly” in the most perfect way) work by Summon of collaborating with one of the greatest James Murphy to help create an album that even Chuck Schuldiner (R.I.P) should have been proud of. Necromodeus (bass & vocals) in this album sounds like him possessed by our Lord Satan himself. Xaphan joins Necromodeus on his shouting on spewing out blasphemy that fills the music pretty well. The drummer, oh yeah, Asteroth is so far up to the level of frost in frost’s work in 1347. His machine gun like drum assault never bores you but instead make you want to headbang until you start to fucking stumble.

Summon knows what the true underground music should sound like and surely they won’t let down anyone who is into “cult” or should I say “true” metal. Although, if I wanted to pigeonhole Summon and put them in a category it would basically be Blackened Death. Let’s face it there are plenty of Death Metal riffs to be found on this album but the band’s main influence is mostly Black Metal bands like Blasphemy(Canada) and Bands from the first wave of Black Metal like Venom. Speaking of Venom, the band did a cover of “Buried Alive” from Venom’s all time classic album “Black Metal.” It is a great cover although some might say they should have done a different cover considering it’s already been done before. The song sounds different, in a good way, production-wise. The only let down is the missing of just a little more great riffs to go with the aggression.

Overall this a solid album with aggression written all over it a la Angel Corpse’s “The Inexorable” and for anyone who is a fan of the “true” underground feel music. A highly recommended album if you haven’t heard Summon’s music before.
