G.O.R.E - Never Sober Level - 60%

Phuling, April 19th, 2008

To quickly get an idea of a band’s lyrical topics you can just read the track titles. But that’s not the case with G.O.R.E. Take for instance Black bell is white heart thrashing after some time is knock down. We hope to white and Long life for king of animals! Pig is king! Eat him all!, now what the hell is that all about? And what’s with the lousy English grammar? I’m sure it’s meant to be funny, but I don’t think I’m getting it. But I guess that’s not really what’s important, now is it…

The music’s pretty grim and raw grindcore, sometimes offering almost Behemoth-vibed death metal, while still keeping a more simplistic and punky Agathocles edge. There’s not really much sense here, and the only thing all tracks have in common is the brutal, layered vocals. The tunes can ooze of rock and roll, and it can transform into one of the weirdest tunes I’ve ever heard; Bush is piG. Fidel CastrO still alive HitleRrrrrrrrr is Usama rEally?. It’s some form of 90ies pop/techno tune they’ve added some guitars and growls to. The result sounds fucked up, and is rather hilarious.

Weird bits and samples have been added to some songs, and it can definitely come out as funny and really weird. But for most of the time my mind goes to think they should’ve put some more effort into the production. It sounds rather thin and weak, and some riffing feels over-simplistic. And also, for a grindcore album there’s not a whole lot of grinding going on. But when they let go of the humour and just mangle, it’s really wicked and brutal.

The CD includes three videos, one of them is Eat meat or die, a song from another album, so I guess that’s cool. But as stated several times already I don’t really get the joke, but I guess some will love it (I mean, people love Anal Cunt, for fuck sake). And if you combine just said band with Agathocles and drape it in metal, you’ve got yourself a Never sober level.
