Macabre Fuckfest - 70%

Vaseline1980, September 25th, 2023
Written based on this version: 2001, CD, Perverted Taste

During thrash metal's peak years in the 80's, Germany boasted its own 'big 4'. I do not believe for a second that I have to explain to any of you who Kreator, Sodom, Destruction and Tankard are, but did you know that in the late 90's the country also boasted a kind of 'big 4' in the style of death/grind? Okay, perhaps 'big' is an overstatement of sorts, but I do seem to remember that the names of Kadath, Nyctophobic, Purgatory and Resurrected had a kind of ring to it in those days. At least in grindcore circles anyway.

Resurrected's third full length offers up a dose of grinding death metal that combines elements from the rougher acts from the earlier 90's in it. After an intro that sounds as if Danny Elfman took a pair of scissors and and a jar of glue to the soundtrack of "Bram Stoker's Dracula", we get a sturdy dose of death metal that resembles that of Sinister, Deicide and Cannibal Corpse more than once. I also detect some Terrorizer, early Morbid Angel and Napalm Death ("Harmony Corruption") as well, so rest assured that this is going to be aggressive for sure. You'll probably be familiar with the recipe: a deep and gruff grunt, placed on top of a foundation of down tuned swarming guitar riffing and fast, blasting percussion, poured into tracks that combine varying degrees of velocity with slower pounding parts. It's no doubt a sturdy blast of death/grind frenzy without a lot of unnecessary frills to it, plowing forward in a straight forward way. It's not the most original modus operandi when it comes to death/grind, but effective this is for sure! The production is pretty straight forward too, putting the most emphasis on the mauling guitar work and the coarse vocals (that get somewhat monotonous as the album progresses), keeping it all basic and grounded. Bit of a shame that the drum sound got that flat-ass late 90's/early 00's treatment, though. It's not completely triggered to shit, but the kick drums do have that flat digital sound to them, as if the drummer is using a pair of cardboard boxes. Which sucked back then, as it does today.

And while we're on the subject of things that suck: that cover of Suffocation's "Infecting the Crypts" is really redundant in my opinion. Executed in a decent way, yes, but it does not surpass the original or adds anything to the album as a whole, and just takes up space that could've been filled by something else, like another track of their own. And that porn sample halfway through annoyed the crap out of me. I tend to dislike 90% of all movie/spoken word samples on albums, but when it comes to porn samples, you can pull that percentage up to 100%, because I've never known that to add anything to a recording, ever.

So there, a way decent but certainly no earth-shattering death metal release that is pretty much of that time. I like this well enough, despite some of its minor flaws, but I'd only recommend it to those curious about grinding death metal from 20 plus years ago. If you're into the stuff released by a label such as Wild Rags in the 90's (Torture Krypt, Mucus Membrane, Legal Butchery, early Dying Fetus, ... you know the drill) I bet you'll be able to get something out of this for sure.
