Smoke weed everyday - 65%

demonomania, July 1st, 2005

This appears to be the motto for the good folks at Bongzilla. Weed is the dominant theme here, from the name to the album title to the song titles to the picture of the band members smoking giant bongs on the inside. I'm assuming that marijuana had a lot to do with the lyric writing process too, as each song has about three lines of lyrics.
Having a low lyric count doesn't stop these guys from writing long songs though. This is certainly a convention in sludge metal - having minimalist words over plodding, doomy compositions. All of these bands, especially Bongzilla and Iron Monkey - sound a whole hell of a lot like Eyehategod to me. I don't know if Eyehategod are the fathers of the drug-abuse sludge metal genre, but they are certainly oft imitated. Everything from the high-pitched, laryngitis vocals to the slow Black Sabbath riffs interspersed with whining feedback are straight out of the IN THE NAME OF SUFFERING playbook.
While I have an appreciation for sludge metal, and can wade through the plodding repetition of ATTAINING, I would much prefer to listen to the original formula in EYEHATEGOD. The little samples about teens smoking marijuana are worth a laugh though. Worth checking out only for sludgeheads.
