Hatework - Broken Silence

"Real" melodic death... - 80%

kd, February 7th, 2004

This band's style changes quite a bit song-to-song(as well as during the songs). They may start off playing brutal death metal in the vein of bands such as Disgorge or say, Kevlar Skin, then the next moment they add all sorts of melodies and harmies. Kind of confusing to me. They remind of early Vhemence, both being from Arizona, and playing melodic deathgrind/brutal death. But the only major differences between the two bands would be the vocals; Hatework sometimes have "gang" or shouted vocals, and they don't use keyboard like Vehemence. This album is really interesting...I mean, come on, melody over slams riffs with gang vocals? The album has a few leads, like only "Mechanically Disemboweled" that lead into breakdowns. The track titled "H.O.H." has a intro with some sort of brass instrument that sounds like some you'd hear on a Nickelodeon cartoon...like I said, very odd-sounding stuff. Alternate vocals, rhythms, and tempos at random = very interesting = check this album out
