Necrofrost - Bloodstorms voktes over Hytrungas' dunkle Necrotroner

Raw and obscure - 90%

Ad_van_den_Boom, June 21st, 2008

This album contains some of the dirtiest, grimmest black metal ever released. The first part of the album has its moments, but can generally be described as quite good underground black in the Bathory/Darkthrone tradition. It’s above average, but nothing spectacular.

The reason to own and cherish this raw slab of filthy black metal are the three final tracks on side B: they are taken from Necrofrost’s demo “Dark fog hovers near the wooden caves of Uldrakhiian bloodforests” from 1998.
When the instrumental “Thulcandra” – not really a cover of the Darkthrone demotrack with the same name, but kind of a prolongation of a theme taken from the second part of that song – echos away, something uncanny happens… A creepy noise sets in with below it a disturbing reverb sound. The intro changes into something orchestral, returns to disturbingly and then... ALL HELL BREAKS LOOSE with “Slaughtered in a misanthropic intent”. The emotions that follow have all to do with the sound of the production: don’t expect a well-oiled commercial black metal-machine. This is the rawest, sloppiest and most blurred recording you can imagine. Like a bunch of cavemen Necrofrost hammers home the three pounding tracks and play very unnerving guitar lines underneath. The voice is very high pitched at times (but not over-the-top like Helheim's Jormundgand) and sounds like the guts come out while screaming. Production wise the only reference I am able to mention are the old Grieghallen albums recorded by Pytten, but then worse. Chances are small that Granskog’s Chamber will be just as famous once; it wouldn’t surprise me if it is indeed just the room of one of the band members or the garage of his parents.

Until now the band succeeds very well in remaining obscure and unknown. The Darkthrone worshipping is dripping from the music, the lyrics, the concept of the albums and even Necrofrost’s band logo. But I must say that Necrofrost’s own proclaimed “This is metallic art of nihilism” is actually true for the three demo tracks. Very dark(throne)!
