Morbid Angel of the Baltics - 85%

natrix, March 14th, 2004

Okay, this is a very competent album, but I have two problems: 1) it doesn't sound as brutal and mean as their demo and 2) what the fuck is that song, "Satan Fallus" doing on here?!
The cover art is pretty odd: some naked blonde (Latvian?) chick wrapped with a snake, and in the mouth of some beast. (Question: What the hell is it with all these Latvian bands putting naked chicks on their albums? Mephisto Lettonica by Neglected Fields has naked girls on the cover as well. Maybe it's because Latvian girls are really beautiful...) At least you know you're going to get good death metal, though.
Now, Karlis gives a good performance on here, but he's changed a few of his drum fills from what he used on the demo. Namely, the part with the weird midpaced string skipping riff in "First Cross," is not nearly as vicious sounding as on the demo. Why? I sure don't know. In general, he doesn't sound as crazy as he did before. Come on man, get pissed!
Vocalist Roberts is still pissed. He's really pissed. So yes, you're still going to get his growls.
There's now a different second guitarist playing with the band, and his work compliments Janis' leads very well. This second guitarist sounds more like Erik Rutan, and this gives the album a more rounded feel.
Okay, now back to the song "Satan Fallus." This is a cover of some other band's song, with a different singer. It sounds like a mixture of Into the Pandemonium-era Celtic Frost and Nirvana, especially with the "waaa, oh, waa, oh waa oh," thing in the beginning. I can only guess to say that there was a lot of alcohol involved in writing this song.
Bottom line: very fucking good death metal, especially if you like the Morbid Angel/Death style with a little added brutality. It doesn't capture the right mood of the band though, that they had on the demo.
