A Taste for Blood

This was the first release I ever listened to from Blood Red Throne, and I actually got it by mistake. And I must say, it’s one of the best mistakes I’ve made in a while. This EP (a rather long one at that, at least to me) blew me away, from the superb guitar work and the technicality of the riffs to the varied but consistent vocal range. I haven’t been this pleasantly surprised since I was twelve, when I picked up Slowly We Rot/Cause of Death by Obituary just out of curiosity.

This EP came as a surprise to me, mostly because I didn’t expect much from it. The songs were longer than I had imagined they’d be, but that doesn’t mean that they get boring, even for a second. Once the guitars kick in on the opening track, I was shitting my pants. The riffing is incredible, and each skull-crushing note was played precisely. The drumming never misses a beat, and the entire band played as one unit.

The vocals are not the typical Brutal Death growl from bands like Disgorge, Brutus, or Severe Torture. What we have here is a mix between those and the style of Jungle Rot and Vader. The most cliché part of the vocals is the use of double tracking, but it is used sporadically and does become a tedious jumbled mess (like on Deicide’s Scars of the Crucifix).

While it is not perfect, it is still damn good. I’m going to get the rest of this band’s discography, based on just this one EP. Pick this up, and you will not regret it.

On this EP, Blood Red Throne does no wrong. It’s a great listen, and I recommend it to any fan of Death Metal looking for a new thrill.
