Vond - Selvmord

Best Mortiis creation ever. Ever. - 97%

HellishBlasphemy, July 29th, 2004

Now, I like a lot of old Mortiis material. Even though I still maintain that it sounds very remeniscent of the background music for Zelda, (but hey! I used to play it religiously...). The other two Vond albums are good in their own respects. Cintecele Diavolui is growing on me, as is Fata Morgana. And of course I love Mortiis-era Emperor, but that's not a Mortiis creation, per se. Selvmord is a masterpiece, and while I throw that word around sometimes, if I ever really mean it, it is for this album. Mortiis says that he was going through a dark period of his life when this was written and recorded (sometime in '94 if I remember correctly), and to be able to capture such multidimensional melancholy in the form of music during such a painful time has always astounded me.

1. Selvmord - Possibly one of the best Mortiis TRACKS ever, or at least one of my favorites of all time... Several changes in mood within this song. The only track on here, I believe, to have lyrics (in Norwegian, no less). Various instruments are used (or simulated) in this song, and in fact the whole album...which is one of the things that put it a notch above (older) Mortiis albums.
2. Når livet tar Farvel - Kind of a windy, epic, introspective feel to it. My second favorite track on here.
3. Reisen til en ny verden - A quiet ominous song that builds into an ominous gallop.
4. Slipp sorgen Løs - A simple song that, again, builds up to a final conclusion to this wonderfully epic depressive album.

Mortiis is behind all the good synth/darkwave that I've heard. And this is a pinnacle in his career. A buy or die release. But the album you will find is the rereleased censored version (only the album cover), with a white cover, with a forest in the center, re-titled 'Slipp sorgen Løs'.
