Dead - You'll Never Know Pleasure - Until You've Tasted Pain

Pretty Impressive - 73%

SnowVixen, June 10th, 2004

A friend of mine recommended this album to me fully knowing my general disdain for all things brutal, but he told me to shut up and and listen to it anyway. I was pleasantly surprised.

Vocally, this band is a mixed bag, as is somewhat common in grind, covering low growls (though not as low as, say, Brodequin), high rasps and the occasional distorted clean vocals. None of the vocals are annoying, all meshing well within the music and, oddly, clearly annunciated.

The music is a somewhat standard death/grind, though staying mostly on the death end of things (ie. songs over 47 seconds). The songs are quite well written, and moments of grind-esque erraticness strike me as intelligently placed (rather than randomly slapped wherever). Instrumental tone is a touch higher than a lot of death, sitting at the lower end of thrash.

The closest comparison for this band that I can think of is The Accused, with just a touch of Pig Destroyer...a few elements of Dying Fetus or earlier Carcass can be found as well. Overall, I do enjoy this album and if everything labeled "grind" was like this, I'd probably be a much bigger fan of the style than I am.
