Katatonia - July

Surprisingly great - 80%

Dark_Mewtwo1, August 3rd, 2008

Usually I'm not one for singles, but this one is pretty special. July is the main track, and it's one of my favorites from the album. It has a great, atmospheric vibe through the first part of the song, and then the breakdown to a gloom-filled middle section before bringing back the atmosphere. The Soil's Song remix is pretty enjoyable too, it fits right in line with Katatonia's usual dark, dreary atmosphere. I enjoy this one quite a bit.

The best out of the 3 tracks, however, is Unfurl. This is a fantastic track that has Katatonia take an electronic approach to their music. The drums are programmed and sequenced, similar to a trip-hop/downbeat song, with a huge, buzzing bass as the backbone of the song. There's quite a heavy use of synths and effects, a simple lead guitar piece, and it all combines together to create quite a great track. Jonas is at his usual vocal quality, it's a really impressive song. It leaves me wondering if Katatonia will continue to follow this style, or if it was a one-off song.

Katatonia fans should acquire this. July is already on TGCD, but the other two tracks, especially Unfurl, makes it worth the purchase/download.
