Mourning Dawn - Mourning Dawn

Great suicidal black metal. - 90%

Bart, January 6th, 2008

Mourning Dawn is one of the countless bands which play depressive black metal. I decided to check out their full-length debut album, mainly because the band features some of the guys from Inborn Suffering and Funeralium. Thankfully I wasn't disappointed. "Mourning Dawn" combines some tremolo riffs with the heavier doom riffs and offers tons of suicidal atmosphere of utter desolation. The songs like fifteen minutes long “From The Torrent And The Fountain” are full of distorted, uncomfortable riffs and surprising tempo changes. Founding member of Mourning Dawn Laurent has a very harsh and piercing shriek, which is suitable for this type of incredibly downbeat music. The dark introductions with which many of the tracks open are also worth noting. Overall, I can safely say that the debut album of Mourning Dawn is not as emotionally draining and utterly bleak as the self-titled debut of French doom metal monsters Funeralium, but fans of early Bethlehem, early Katatonia, Silencer, Xasthur or Nortt should definitely give this band a chance.

My favourite tracks: "From The Torrent And The Fountain", "Verdun".
