Hakenkreuz Nocturna - Eternal Introspective Winter

So cold... - 90%

Algiz88, October 18th, 2007

Their demo "Pure Need of Hate" is one of the most played demos ever here at my abyss. Needless to say I had high hopes for their first fullength when it was released.
Since the demo the band has worked on their sound and come up with one of the most freezing releases in a long time. The production on this release sounds like a bastard spawn of a mix between Darkthrone around "Transilvanian Hunger" and the earlier works of Branikald/Forest. It is brilliant and holds a lot of the cold solitude that can be be found on early albums by the aforementioned artists. The music is built around simplistic and primitive melodies and riffs that are very effective and with a lot of emotions built into them. The drumming on this release does what is needed and are kept simple yet powerful. The reason for why this album does not get the highest rating possible is the vocals. To my ears they are a bit too weak and does not match the music in terms of emotion and dedication. This is the only flaw of this album and it should also be known that I am very picky when it comes to vocals...

This is a great release that promises a lot for the future and I cannot wait to hear what this very interesting band will bring forth for their next release. I know that I will keep listening to this album for the rest of my days and so should you because you will not find many albums that is better than this one! Cold black black metal that is both deep and primitive. Just listen to the track "November Sky".
