Cryptic Wintermoon - Cryptic Wintermoon

Debut EP Un-encrypted - 70%

Megiddo, February 10th, 2004

This is a better than average example of the death/black genre. The vocals are a harmony a black metal snarl with some deeper death growls thrown in appropriately. Musically, this occasionally falls into some of the traps of the more "popular" black metal cliches, such as harpsichord styled keys and atmospheric breaks (track 4, "Doomsday"), however for the most part, this works with what they are trying to do. The opening track, "Shadowland" is a highlight. I get the feeling listening to this I have heard it all before but in a way that is not all bad. The playing, composition, and execution are better than many of the contenders (pretenders?) that pollute this genre. All in all, buy this album, but don't spend your rent money on it.
