Nucleus Torn - Krähenkönigin

Acoustic greatness - 88%

Veritas_In_Omnes, March 22nd, 2008

This EP has been recorded in 1998 and waited 6 years in the drawers of Fredy Schnyder before finally being released through Kunsthall Produktionen limited to 300 copies.

At the time, Nucleus Torn should be more or less known for their rather avant-garde approach of rock, metal and classical music. But back then, when Fredy was the only person behind Nucleus Torn it was more a folkloristic approach only featuring acoustic guitars. But even here it isn’t just folk but more classical music. The structure of the songs reveals that after just a few seconds. There is no pattern or theme the songs follow in general but more a constant flow. Hardly any pieces of these four unnamed songs are repeated throughout them.

The mood of the songs is varying within seconds. When you listen to a rather melancholic and sad melody, the mood changes shortly after to a rather hopeful atmosphere. It’s hard to describe this process. You’d need to hear it yourself to fully comprehend it.

But what’s most intriguing about “Krähenkönigin” is the fact that it sounds more like music from the middle ages than any music from self claimed Medieval Music bands. It truly captures a feeling without letting it go, whilst other bands of the genre just use the same bland melodies over and over again. So overall this is a very interesting EP. Compact but beautiful. The fact that it has only been released on vinyl is also very fitting. I know, this EP is going to be re-released on CD by Prophecy Productions, but in my opinion vinyl is the only choice for this EP. As the music has a somewhat ritualistic atmosphere, the vinyl has, when one puts it on the platter. This music is absolutely sublime and so is the format it’s being pressed on. Recommended to everyone who likes eerie acoustic music, because this is a masterpiece of its genre. Get it while you can.
