Legion of the Damned - Sons of the Jackal

Show me on the doll where the album touched you - 92%

BloodIronBeer, April 16th, 2007
Written based on this version: 2007, CD, Massacre Records

I've re-written this review because this is probably one of my most listened-to metal albums of the last 5 years, and my last review didn't reflect how great this album is.

If you take nothing else away from this review, take only this: Legion of the Damned is unmatched in pure malicious, rip-your-fucking-face-off aggression! From the opening track, you know this album is about to put a rapin' on you.

The band is a even marriage of death and thrash, with pummeling drums, a tasty, crunchy guitar tone that saws through your ear canal and outright brutal lyrics. I rarely remark, or put a whole lot of concern in the lyrics, but carried by the music these lyrics make a huge impact, and I've often saying, "Wow, that was a sick line."

"The destroyer of god, The lord of the dead, Angel of the abyss, Abaddon reigns

Cast aside and godforsaken, Undead stillborn, I was born to hate this world"

Yes, you were born to hate this world, vocalist guy. As he says each vicious line, you truly believe every word.

From headbanging mid-tempo riffs that hold their own against any thrash great, to the blistering whip-lash inducing tracks, this band won't relent on the malice.

The album is relentless in it's sinister, pissed-off tone. The vocals mirror the overall blend of thrash and death with higher screams and throaty growls trading off throughout. The production is full and crisp, just about perfect. With a concept and sound as straightforward as this, you need the proper production values to really drive the point home - and the band was fortunate to kill it on production.

The only weakness of the album is the relative repetitiveness, with Infernal Wrath and Diabolist being a little lukewarm by the time you get to that point, but overall this album is just intense, crushing death-thrash done just about as well as it can be done. I can't overstate the aggressiveness of this album - what it lacks in diversity and technicality it easily makes up for in the fact that you won't have a face when you're done with this album.
