Asgaroth - Red Shift

Strange, but quite good metal - 85%

WilliamAcerfeltd, September 13th, 2007

Notice, how I called referred to this album as metal in the title. That's because Asgaroth play a very obscure style of metal which is very hard, nigh impossible to define. Now, I'm not to sure about this, but I believe Spain is very big on electronic/techno music. If this is so, then it's obvious that these guys were obvious heavily influenced by this.

The music is very heavy and is often packed with keyboards and electronic effects. The music has a lot of variety and the riffs change around a fair bit to keep the listener interested.

The vocals are strange to say the least. They range from talking, screams, black metal vocals and even clean vocals. The vocals are quite good for the most part and usually used in the appropriately. What I mean buy that is that they add to the atmosphere of chaos on this album. My only compliant is that the clean vocals aren't used more because the singer is quite a good clean vocalist.

As mentioned above, all the elements in this album are rather mashed together, to create a stressful atmosphere of chaos. I've never heard anything like it before but it’s definitely a good thing. It's quite easy to lose yourself with in it.

The album has some very strange instrumental songs. They start off normally enough, on acoustic and piano respectively. But as the soon progresses strange sound effects are added, which compliments the overall weird feeling that comes with this atmosphere. Unfortunately, the instrumental songs aren't as interesting as the other songs; however, they aren't bad nonetheless.

I'm giving this album 85 because all in all, this is a solid, entertaining piece of metal which really is one of a kind, if you like strange, sometimes disturbing metal, then this for you. This album loses marks because some songs are not as interesting as others. Unfortunately, it seems the album seems to have disbanded, this was there last album and it was released over 5 years ago now. As with a lot of bands on the archives, sometimes they split-up and this site doesn't get the message. Will we see a new Asgaroth album in the future? Who knows, one can only hope so.

NB: This is such a short review because the album is very difficult to describe, it needs to be heard in the first person.

Conclusion: The above is strongly recommended for download or purchase, especially if you like strange metal.
