Profundi - The Omega Rising

Naglfar, but GRIMMER - 93%

ghastlylugosi, March 18th, 2008

As you know from reading the info on this, this is a very-much one man project...or is that one DEMON? If you are interested in this release, you are probably familiar with Naglfar---very heavy and fast, melodic riffs inside the BM mayhem, very accomplished musicianship, and extremely spiteful and grim vocals of this hissing, howling, shrieking kind (with an occasional delve into lower-end growlings). Take Naglfar's "Sheol" album and pump up the darkness and sheer terror, and you have their former vocalist's own project, Profundi.

Honestly, there is not very much to seperate this "Omega Rising" from a Naglfar release except for the much colder feel of it. There ARE extremely tasteful additions of what sounds like a massive old pipe organ here and there, used to gruesomely creepy effect! But there is not a preponderance of keyboards.......the guitars are ripping and fierce, the tempo is almost entirely fast, and perhaps the drums could've been more prominent in the mix, though this is a very sparkling and clear, if shrill, production. Jens' vocals are just as interestingly varied as they were with Naglfar, and the listener will find many parts that remain stuck in the brain.

This is upon first listen and exhausting experience. I can't quite pinpoint why...perhaps because many of the parts are just so blurringly fast that they are hard to discern from others, but upon a few more listens one can pick out all the variety on hand here from this obvious MeTal master. I must also mention the artwork/booklet/layout, all done by Jens himself.....the version I have, apparently the North American digipak one, has some artwork that interplays nicely with itself; without spoiling the surprise, I will tell you that it shows almost a zoetropic progression of something gleefully violent happening, if THAT'S obscure enough for you!
