Urn - Dawn of the Devastation

Boring and bland - 60%

FrostOfTheBlack, December 16th, 2006

Urn's Dawn of Devastation seems to be about 25 years behind its time. Seriously, this is the exact same stuff that Venom and Hellhammer were doing in the early 1980s. Urn plays a bland style of blackened thrash metal. It's sort of 'fun' to listen to if you just want to bang your head and play your air guitar along to it, but there's nothing new or original here. Basically all the songs seem to be variations of Venom's "Die Hard" or "Sacrifice". The guitar riffs are mediocre at best. The lyrics are even lamer than anything Venom ever did. It was painful to hear the constant chorus of track 3: "possessed by Satan, possessed by Satan," etc.

There are some redeeming qualities though. The drums are pretty decent, though nothing special or amazing. There is heavy use of well-placed double bass rhythms, along with some snare-intensive blast beats. The drums fit well with the fast-paced thrash metal feel of the album. The vocals fit well with the music as well, but they are also pretty boring and don't change at all during the course of the album.

If you are looking for modern bands that are playing this type of metal and actually doing a decent job, I'd suggest looking into Toxic Holocaust, Witchery, Usurper and Celtic Frost instead.
