Mumakil - Customized Warfare

Blastcore - 90%

1000ton, December 14th, 2007

Mumakil is the new band from former Knut and Nostromo members, but the brutality expressed by this album makes sound those two bands like metalcore. "Customized Warfare" is a pure blast of furious grind/death madness 35 minutes all the way through without any kind of break, the songs are short (most of them last a few seconds) but incredibly intense, the production is clear which makes it more enjoyable, and the musicians are probably among the best in modern grindcore along with Nasum or Rotten Sound.

The bass on this recording is actually good, but it takes very little place compared to the guitars and especially the drums. The bass player here is Tav from Knut, but Mumakil has really no Knut influence at all. On guitars we have Jéjé from Nostromo, and some riffs may sound like his previous band in some parts but here he generally plays a more brutal and less technical style, think like Napalm Death's "Utopia Banished" mixed with the frenetic riffs on Nostromo's "Ecce Lex", anyway he does a grat job.
The vocals are completely insane, the "singer" Thomas can do all the types of exteme vocals that can fit with death metal or grind: he easily alternates between death gowls, high pitched shrieks and an excessively grotesque guttural voice (think Demilich or Last Days of Humanity), the last one being the more present through the album. Thomas in surely one of the most talented gowlers in the current grindcore scene. Oh, and the lyrics: they are not printed in the booklet, all the song titles are roman numbers and you can't understand a word the guy's saying when he sings
Now, the best part of the cake: the DRUMS! This drummer is absolutely mind-blowing, his blastbeats are ridiculously fast and sometimes he even blasts with the two hands on the snare drum! The drums are definitely the key element of the band's sound, and they take the first place in the mix to get sure you will hear it clearly. Fucking incredible drummer.

This album is without any doubt the best grindcore album of the last two or three years, it's extremely fast, well played and fucking brutal! And there is also a Napalm cover that goes almost unnoticed. Being their first full-length, I wonder what the hell is gonna come after. If you like fast, brutal and well played grind/death you WILL like this
