ThunderStorm - Witchunter Tales

Nice doom album - 84%

MetalThunder, September 8th, 2003

Thunderstorm are a doom metal band hailing from Italy. Formed in the early 90s, it wasn't until 2000 that their first full-length album, SAD SYMPHONY, was released. Their second album, WITCHUNTER TALES, was released two years later and Thunderstorm show that they can swing with the big boys.

On WITCHUNTER TALES, Thunderstorm pull out all the stops -- the vocals are excellent, the guitars are heavy and atmospheric, while maintaining a good speed. The album production is crisp and clear, adding to the power of the vocals. There aren't any growling vocals on this album as they are all cleanly sung, which is quite refreshing.

The title track is probably my favorite on the album. The song builds slowly for the first minute and a half, then breaks in to an excellent riff that wouldn't be out of place on a good thrash album. The vocals on this track are, as usual, superb, adding a great deal to the overall feel of the music. The only disappointing track on the album is "Edge of Insanity" -- it is simply a short acoustic piece used as filler. The last track on the album is a great cover version of Black Sabbath's "Eletric Funeral."

The rest of the album is great with many great riffs in there. The drumming isn't overly great, but the drumming does enough to support the other instruments. Definitely an album worth checking out!
