Excessum - Instruction for Self-Destruction

A Lot of Fun - 67%

Israel actually turns out some pretty decent bands. I mean, you've got the well-known and fantastic Orphaned Land, the less well-known and more fantastic Melechesh, and then you have these guys.

Excessum/The Fading don't really do anything we haven't heard several times before, they just do it better than most. They're described as death/thrash, which a pretty apt way to classify them: they bring a little bit of brutal/technical death's musicianship and dissonance, toss in some aggressive, thrashy riffs straight out of Exodus' playbook, weave in a hint of Gothenburg harmonies (which aren't bad if tastefully done, as they are here) and melodic solos, and top it all off with blastbeats. The vocals are somewhere in between a scream and a growl - not the deep, back-of-the-throat stuff of death metal, but not a black metal or deathcore screech either. Perhaps a mid-range growl would be the best way to describe them - in any case, they're effective.

As an EP, of course, this is pretty brief, but it's entertaining while it lasts. Also worth noting is the fairly decent recording quality, which is impressive for a self-released EP. You can hear everybody (except the bassist, but I guess one gets used to that in metal), and the guitar tone is pretty good.

I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoys The Black Dahlia Murder, Carnal Forge, and the like, since these guys are mostly in that vein. As I said before, there's nothing particularly original or "breakthrough" about it, but it's good for what it is. An enjoyable listen worth picking up if you can find it.
