Hyades - And the Worst Is Yet to Come

Italian thrash revival - 95%

Nightwalker, January 9th, 2008

When a band sells t-shirts with "Anti-Emo Megamosh Force" or "Thrash Now, Work Later" on, they better be good. 'Cause if not, those t-shirts do not represent a real thrash spirit. Luckily this band hasn't got the slightest problem in realising one of the best albums within the genre in a long time. And I'm saying this in a non-euforic way, otherwise the space I'm given wouldn't be big enough.

After years of struggling the band finally got a label in 2005, that resulted in "Abuse Your Illusions". From that moment on this band couldn't be ignored. Nevertheless the debut got about no attention and went lost in the overload of thrash albums that were made the last few years. Now they're back. Touring through Europe like crazy with positive result (for example: they played already three times in Belgium since September '06 and are playing again this year). It seems that the audiance finally is beginning to accept them. And why should they not? Hyades brings an authentic sound resembling German thrash gods like Kreator, Tankard and Destruction (I didn't put Sodom between them, 'cause they aren't a good comparison for this band, before I get hatemail due to the forgetting of Sodom). They've got the modern old school sound in them, completely overwhelmed with the 80s spirit. By that I mean the sound of the latest Onslaught, Exodus and Kreator albums.

Songs like "Megamosh", "Skate Addiction" and "Wops Still Thrash" represent the 80s Bay Area and skate/surf-influenced Anthrax spirit. Times when skate-culture wasn't absorbed by ego and brandnames and when it still had the 'fuck authority'-mentality - that's how you need to listen to Hyades' music.

Every fan of Exodus should be obligated to check this band out ("Valley of Tears" or "Wops Still Thrash" could as well be Exodus songs, the resemblance is stunning) and to say even more: every thrash fan should be obligated to check this band out. MEGAMOSH!!

Thrash?! Don't Mind if I Do! - 93%

TiredOfBeingAlive, June 23rd, 2007

Hyades...an unknown band to me until I came across their album cover and I was instantly hooked. The reason the cover caught my eye is because it was done by none other than Metal Cover Legend Ed Repka! Enough of that, lets get to the music...

The album starts off with a very nice acoustic passage familiar to fans of Alice In Hell by Annihlator. Then it turns into the most badass shit to come out of Europe in the last 15 years! Yes, I mean it's equal or better than Kreator, Sodom, Destruction, Celtic Frost, all those...it's that good.

One thing I noticed is it's extremely close sound to new Exodus. The solos even sound the same! The only difference really is the vocals, and at times, they can also seem quite similar. They have the exact guitar sound. If anything, this thrashes more than the newest 2 Exodus releases.

Comparing this to Exodus would seem like murder to this album, but if Exodus would have written any of these songs during the TOTD or SHKM sessions, they would have easily made the cut, and we'd have 2 very different song lists on those cds.

I recommend this to anyone in search of hope that Thrash is still alive and well. Fans of new Exodus, here's your new saviors! (After all, Exodus can't keep going forever...can they?)
