Imposer - Imposition Servant - 60%

Phuling, April 23rd, 2008

Imposition Servant opens up in an intense inferno of neck-snapping drums and heavy, pounding strings accompanied by a deep roar from the abyss. And so it sets off in a great old school death metal kinda way with semi-murky sound with slicing riffs and churning growls. But after a few songs I get a feeling of déjà vu. And it takes me almost the entire demo before I figure out what’s going on; the bloody tempo’s pretty much the same throughout all seven tracks. Sure, there are slower and faster parts and a few breakdowns, but the main tempo remains unchanged. And that is something that really bothers me. And when the vocals remains pretty much the same as well, it becomes a bit boring in the end when all tunes blends together and feels like one looong song. But let’s try to overlook that and see what’s really going on.

The riffs slices through the air like a redneck armed with a chainsaw out on a murderous rampage (meaning harsh and very good riffing). The drumming’s without a doubt competent and varies from slow pounding to blasting, but as I said earlier it’s a bit too alike in all the tracks. The vocals are fair growling, but also a bit too monotonous, and I miss either a brighter or deeper voice from time to time instead of riding on the same successful level all the time. Sound-wise it’s good enough for decent demo sound, but too murky to really be good. Sure, it sounds old school, but it’s nothing more than decent. The occasional guitar solo’s are great most of the time, and adds a mean touch to it. But the full-on experience of the demo’s a bit monotonous and boring. There’s definitely competence, but still a lot of room for evolvement.

The band’s currently working on a fullength, and I sure hope it’ll have a bit more diversity to it. It’s difficult to be original, but an attempt to stand out of the crowd is always nice.
