Starkweather - Croatoan

As brutal as a punch to the dick - 95%

Inverted_Jesus666, April 9th, 2008

I found this album one day at the local record store in the used metal section. I thought the artwork was pretty cool looking, so I bought it and took it home not expecting much. The first couple listens didn't really yield anything special either. But as I kept listening to the album, I began noticing things I hadn't before.

The drums have an improvised feel to them as they don't really follow a certain beat during each song. The drums are constantly changing and always doing something different during each track. The vocals are about as diverse as the drums, since the singer switches between raspy screams to rough singing at the drop of a dime. The guitars, while not the most technical sounding, pull the songs along and go very well with the drums and vocals.

The songs have a very frantic atmosphere to them; the songs twist and lurch at every turn. The poetic lyrics also do a very good job of adding to the atmosphere of the music. Each song is different and transition very well from brutal dick-punching heavy to slow, mellowed out sludgy doom.

This is definitely an album that has to grow on you. But if you take the time to listen to it and appreciate it, you'll find that it's a greatly crafted album that pretty much rocks your damn balls off.
