Dreams of Damnation - Epic Tales of Vengeance

Surprisingly Enjoyable - 73%

Razakel, December 22nd, 2007

Who the hell are Dreams of Damnation you ask? They’re an American thrash metal band with Jim Durkin from Dark Angel and a crazy female vocalist who sounds similar to Arch Enemy’s Angela Gossow, which is saying a lot. Although she isn’t as hot. I always like checking out female fronted metal bands as they often bring something new to the sound. I’m not one to be picky about genre labelling, but thrash metal? I guess so, but just to not mislead the listener it is important to note that it is very death metal influenced. If you picked up this album with Slayer in mind you might be disappointed.

Epic Tales of Vengeance opens up with a slow, brooding instrumental introduction that leads nicely into the strongest track on these guys have to offer. Kill for Peace is more than just a cool song title. It’s a fast paced song reminiscent of old school thrash metal with fast vocals and shredding guitars. Things slow down as the tribal drum beats start up with Beyond Salvation. These drums sound pretty cool but are entirely out of place as they are soon dismissed as the song erupts into a mid paced track. The music speeds up once again with The Bloodletting which features some short but pretty kickass guitar solos. Eaters of the Dead is a cool ending track. Short, but packed with speed and destruction as we hear everything from black metal shrieks to guttural growls.

Seven tracks including an intro? Sort of more like an EP but whatever. The music actually sounds very professional for an underground American thrash band. Drums are heavy and fast while the guitar doesn’t disappoint. A few more solos thrown in somewhere wouldn’t have hurt though. Vocals were the aspect that impressed me the most. This woman really gives it and has a lot of potential.

This album has enough potential to make me consider looking into future releases but it’s nothing mind blowing. The music is definitely enjoyable though. It’s far from mandatory but if your looking for some cool thrash/death metal to headbang to, this probably won’t disappoint.
