Excelsis - Kurt of Koppigen

A marked improvement - 88%

Esoteric, March 17th, 2003

Kurt of Koppigen, Excelsis' sophomore effort, improves on their debut in almost every area. While the band still follows more or less the same formula, the songs are now catchier and a bit more...original? At the very least, they're more addictive than the tracks on Anduin the River.

The album also follows a bit more original concept than ATR, forsaking Tolkien for the Swiss book "Kurt of Koppigen."

On this release, Excelsis also managed to churn out several songs that SHOULD be classics by now, such as "Dragonslayer," "Song of Agnes," and "Ambush in Langenthal," all three of which will hook into your brain and refuse to let go, as any good song should. That's not to say that the other tracks are filler; they're all quite good.

This is an album that any fan of HEAVY power metal, or folk-influenced metal should own. The strange production aside (it seems to be strangely powerless unless you turn it up to "deafening"), it's still a worthy addition to any fan of power metal that aspires to be something other than AOR for AD&D fanatics.

Standout Tracks: Dragonslayer, Song of Agnes, Ambush in Langenthal, The Lost Chapter
