Aversion to Life - Ritualized Murder

Skullfucked, December 5th, 2007

…but that doesn’t mean shit. This brutal death quartet from Texas may not do much different from the sick, grinding metal that is a dime a dozen nowadays, but what they do, they do a hell of a lot better than most.

If you’re a fan of ultra brutality from such bands as Devourment, Putrid Pile and Liturgy, than this release is definitely for you. The song structure is the same as most of their brethren, and surprise surprise, so are the lyrics, the drumbeats, the riffs, and pretty much everything else. But, what makes them stand out is the incredible tightness with which they play, and the pure genius that they work in the confines of such a restrictive genre.

After a few listens, you would be excused for thinking this as just another brutal death album, but you’ll find your self coming back more and more, to listen again and again. One of the notable things about this album is the production. While it is not spectacular, and can sound a little muddy at times, every instrument is clearly audible, even the bass, which alone make s them stand out a bit. Also unlike most other bands of this genre, the vocals are not too overpowering, and sound exactly what such disgustingly guttural vocals should sound like, and that is another instrument.

The riffing is pure and solid, none of this breakdown shit that is passing for brutality these days, just intense skullfuckery that will leave you gasping for air, and more than likely, crying for your mommy. No silly guitar solos here, just pulverising, crushing solidness. The drums also leave nothing to be desired. No-ones going to be wowed with extraordinary technical skill, but with this kind of music, such would be out of place.

So for all you sick fuck brutal death metal heads out there, this release is for you. And for all you melodeath loving fans, stay away, lest you be crushed into nothingness by the brutality that is Ritualized Murder.
