Ghost Orgy - Lullabies for Lunatics

Eerie And Evil - 84%

Erin_Fox, October 29th, 2006

By employing the talents of Elena Doroftei, a viola player, the doomy, gothic sounding Ghost Orgy come off as completely and utterly original sounding.

However, this is simply one facet of differential substance in a group that is truly unique. Vocalist Dina Concina has a wonderful voice that reaches for all manners of exciting angles on cryptic melodies such as “Twisted Into Oblivion” , “Mortal Coil” and “Thirteen”. Her vocalizations are wildly alive with an alluring, mysterious presence.

Ghost Orgy could be considered to be progressive in that their compositions are thoughtfully arranged and consistently executed with a twist, making this album one of the most dramatic and creative among independent releases this year. Guitarist Meric Sarkhov employs an abstract direction, lapsing between wide open chord voicing, blunt attacks and melodic movements.

Trance inducing and darkly dreamy, “Nothing” oozes with the passionate crooning that is Concina’s signature, imparting a decidedly haunting tone. The interesting addition of the viola on this track makes this song all the more interesting, as the use of this instrument brings an eerie quality to the mix to much success.

“Cloaked In Fear” is an inspiring bit of melodious doom that transcends modern stereotypes, making it one of the distinct highlights of this record.

Ghost Orgy have touched upon a style that is wholly their own, making this release a standout effort.
