Cockroach - The Observer

Observing the roaches - 90%

rna_yu1, April 29th, 2008

I was introduced to Cockroach through their previous album “Temple Of Mystery” and I found it one solid piece of thrash metal. It scared the shit out of me when I read the info sheet, which stated that their new album also introduces Fear Factory and newer Sepultura influences. I have to say that I was relieved once I heard the album and found out this was completely untrue.

Cockroach have continued down the path they followed so far, further developing their style towards modern thrash metal, but bands like Dew-Scented and The Haunted, not Fear Factory or anything similar. The major difference between the new offering and “Temple Of Mystery” is that production work is another step better. Some may say that this production work doesn’t exactly fit a thrash metal band for being too polished, thus taking away the rawness. I say that this is exactly the kind of production a modern day band needs to have in order for its music to reach its full potential. Everything is crystal clear, you can hear every instrument and every note clearly as a day and it’s not too polished. I’ve already mentioned one band whose fans might like this release, and that’s Dew-Scented (also fans of Delirious can find themselves in this). Unlike them, Cockroach are all the way in thrash metal, missing the factor that connects Dew-Scented with death metal – grunting vocals. Here they appear, but only occasionally and even then there aren’t that extreme.

I hope I’ll see Cockroach name more often in publications I like, as I think they deserve as much attention that is bestowed upon some other acts.
