Impaled Nazarene - Decade of Decadence

Meh... - 60%

I can't say that I ever truly enjoyed anything from Impaled Nazarene but their new works. This collection drags many demos and singles together on one bigger pack that all curious fans, and non-fans together can enjoy for it's occasional brilliance. The production varies from poor necro-crap, to the more balanced recordings and the musicianship is any bit as tight/good as we've come to expect from the Finnish filth-masters. This collection is one of those "you have to be a fan" presentations though, as the overall feeling is one of "we do what we do better than anyone...but you have to like exactly what we do for this to make any sense." Despite enjoying these recorded works more than any of the albums they act as bookends for...it's still mostly a "fan only" type of release.

The songwriting on this CD is quite "hit or miss". The absolute march of "Condemned to Hell" is impressive", the tribal beats of "Damnation (Raping the Angels)" has some fun bits as does the interesting "Sadogoat". Much of this has more vision than a lot of the strange wanderings of the full lengths but still somehow comes short of being brilliant and crafted in the manner of a classic record. This is the best of the "early" work by these Finnish blokes by far, in my humble opinion...and I almost wish the key tracks on this had become blueprints for the bands entire career.

Impaled Nazarene are a archtype of something only they can do correctly, and if you like that or not is entirely up to you. Here they are at their least self-concious and most extreme but also at some of their least chaotic. If you can get through all of this, or are a fan of Impaled Nazarene...I suggest that you own this as you can only benefit from the overall affect.

It's a good record...but hardly something I can endorse as I would many other records...purchase with caution.
