Ordo Tyrannis - Vasa Iniquitatis

Stretching the Genre - 70%

earthwormgaz, October 23rd, 2006

Its an odd one this. Labeled as Industrial/Black metal, I'm not sure I can agree with the genre. Its like nothing else I have picked up that has the "Black" tag.

Personally, I think Khanate are a good comparison. The atmosphere is very reminiscent of their material, as are the vocals. To my knowledge, nobody refers to them as being at all "Blackened", hence my earlier point. There is a healthy measure of Doom here I would say.

Still, this is certainly a creepy album, and is loaded with menace. They got the length about right I would say, at 50 minutes, you wouldn't want it to be any longer, because certain aspects of the sound tend to repeat. The worst culprit being the odd "toy town gone bad" sound, which I think *is* actually produced by a guitar.

It is the sort of CD that you will think about in terms of soundscape rather than songs, heavy on the atmospherics, with little to speak of in terms of raw beef or riff work in the guitar department.

The stand out track is probably "Birth In Upheaval", which finds a sinister sequence and exploits it thoroughly in true black metal style, leaving you lost in cold drone and detached repetition.

A break from the norm then, and something different to tickle your interest.
