Deranged - Obscenities in B-flat

Pure DM, No Other Influences Here... - 77%

MorturomDemonto, June 23rd, 2007

I've seen adds about Deranged in Terrorizer magazine, and well they sounded like quite the Death Metal band. So I eventually found this album and ordered it over the internet. I must say that this is just Death Metal in it's purest form.

You could pretty much say that this is Cannibal Corpse on steroids, with a lot of blasting, chugging and tremolo picking. And a lot more entertaining, and less predictable. Onto the review.

The guitars are nice and chunky, and are somewhat technical. They have a nice thick sound, but are not overkilled. The solos range from bluesy solos to utter shredfests, and having the guitarist switch from both styles does give it somewhat of an edge. The bass does pop out here and there, but again, and again I repeat, I wish you could hear the goddamn bass absolutely clearly. The drums just blast constantly. I'm wondering if the drummer takes steroids or something, because he is just blasting constantly. However from time to time, the music slows down, allowing the drums to breathe and actually get a groove flowing. The vocals are your typical monotonous Death Metal vocals, nothing particular here, but they are sure as hell fit in perfectly with the music. The production overall is kind of muddy, and has a very thick, organic sound. It isn't absolutely clear, but it does the job for me. I don't think I could see this band with perfect production.

This is the record for you if you are looking for a similar band to Cannibal Corpse, but less boring. Not an obligatory buy however, but a good listen.
