Mutilated Soul - Decomposition - 75%

Phuling, April 23rd, 2008

I’ve sat down at least a dozen times to review this album, but I’ve never managed to get anything on paper. ‘Cause every time I press play I end up with this confused state of mind. This is really good music, but it still doesn’t really get me going. I don’t know why, and so I haven’t been able to focus and figure out what to write. But this time I’ll do it, dammit!

It’s some form of mix of the new and brutal versus the old and rougher death metal, a bit like taking Incantation and brutal-it-up (I just invented a brand new expression; brutal-it-up, hehe) a bit to fit the more modern agenda. You can even add a tiny dose of Cannibal Corpse if you wish. But what really surprises me is that I get a Finnish feeling when this is an Italian band clearly into the American way of death metal. I have no idea why. Anyway… The riffing’s heavy and churning and the guitar solos fit like a glove. In all honesty the killer solos are probably the highlights of the whole thing, but the overall string work is commendable. They’ve used a session drummer for the recording, but they’ve hopefully found an equally skilled mangler to fill his shoes. The vocals are mostly deep grunting, which sounds a tad monotonous, but is lifted by the help of the killer gnarly screams from time to time. The tempo of the tunes varies from the slower and heavier parts to the usual blasting; all in the way we want it. But I gotta get back to the guitars. I mean holy shit damn there are a lot of passages that are absolutely murderous guitar-wise.

So what is there not to like about the CD? Well, I don’t know honestly. But there’s still something there that hinders me from really digging in, and I can’t put my finger on it. But it’s a self-released CD and it would seriously surprise me if they won’t be able to dig up a label willing to release their next effort, ‘cause this is way better than tons of bands getting released. Track five, Infernal Requiem, returns as track seven, but this time with Italian lyrics. In all honesty I would never hear the difference if it wasn’t for the slight difference in vocal patterns and an added guitar solo, but I suppose it’s a treat for Mutilated Soul’s fellow countrymen.
