Flotsam and Jetsam - Live in Japan

Another mediocre DVD by Flotsam... - 72%

overkill67, September 2nd, 2006

OK boys, what seems to be the problem?

I must confess that the performances by the band on this DVD is a vast improvement from the last one, the abomination known as Live in Phoenix. Especially Mark Simpson who not only solos in key, but even does some interesting stuff on the fretboard...still not properly fitting the shoes of Mike Gilbert mind you.

Eric AK manages to grab a hold of a few extra notes this time around, but again, Eric is really starting to show definate signs of age catching up with him in the falsetto department. This is really shitty, because without Eric, I believe that there simply would not be another Flotsam. Eric's voice is to Flotsam, what Hetfield's voice is to Metallica, know what I mean?

Anyway, although the overall performances of the band are relatively good, there are only 8 friggin' songs on this whole cheap ass DVD. No bonus footage (except for 1 fuckin' video). Like if you actually compare this with many other thrash bands DVD's from recent, you gotta wonder what the fuck Flotsam were thinking. Annihilator, Sodom, and even Vio-lence who've been defunct for more than a decade, all released stellar DVD's this past year. I seriously think that if the band wouldn't have rushed this DVD so quickly and compiled at least another concert worth of material, then I firmly believe that it would be revered as a far better release. In other words, as a fan...I wan't my fucking money's worth! It's not even an hour long for crying out loud!

Another complaint about this DVD is the clarity of the footage. Don't get me wrong, there are multiple camera angles filming the show, but the sharpness of the video absolutely sucks, its just a little bit better than camcorder material.

It is cool though to see Blitz from Overkill standing off to the side of the stage taking what appears to be great interest from the bands performance and showing them the respect as a fellow thrasher from way back in the day.

Once again, for what it is its fairly decent, there's just not enough of it!
