Beherit - Morbid Rehearsals

I wanna know who that girl is that's laughing - 35%

The_Boss, October 9th, 2008

Well Beherit's second demo is more of a toss up for me. The problem I had with their first demo was the production and the problem here is... the production. Seems like they have a plan and are sticking to it; being minimalistic, occult, evil, and making some primitive black metal. This is a very short release of them, obviously in the studio (you can hear voices in the background and beginnings of songs and people walking around), and is something more than their first demo.

First thing I notice, is that the vocals now being too high in the mix on Seventh Blasphemy was very grating and irritating, but on Morbid Rehearsals, the vocals are so low on my first listen of Morbid Gods I had no idea he had even been growling for like 30 seconds before I realized it. It's very low in the mix but at the same time you can still somewhat hear him, it's different from what I heard on Seventh Blasphemy; now being more of just atypical black metal style of harsh rasps and growls that are so low and following an early style that it's impossible to even try and attempt to understand. The second thing I find different (and a good thing) is that their are solos, reminding me of more early style extreme metal with some fast and wicked solos that I really like as being incorporated in. The drums seem better and blast faster this time, although it's so noisy at this point it's hard to tell if he's staying on rhythm or not.

This 4 song sophomre demo is a better release for Beherit, something they should have released instead of their boring first demo. Voice Succubus is a 32 second song that has 12 seconds of people walking around and laughing before it starts off with hyper blast mode and yelling and... noise. It's rather pointless, as if they wanted to play some fucking evil shit for 20 seconds to impress the girls you can hear laughing in the background by playing really fast and screaming loudly in the microphone, which is what he's doing. Ultimate War is probably the second best song so far, but in the end it still falls into the category of noisy primative black metal, but the ending solo and scream are pretty decent. Morbid Gods is by far their best song so far with actually some sort of direction with legitimate evil sounding riffing at the beginning, starting off slow and evil like, then actually twisting together into more; but once again I shall state that their noisy sound and shit production ruins it's chances of being something actually "good".

Beherit's first two demos are rather weak and unessential. This isn't something I can imagine many people liking, unless you're one of those guys that loves really raw, early, noisy and minimalistic black metal then Beherit is for you. Morbid Rehearsals has some decent moments that I will enjoy as a fan of some black metal, with a couple sweet solos, riffs, and segues that are more in the vein of early extreme metal bands like Hellhammer and Celtic Frost.
