Angel Witch - Loser

Catchy single by the masters of NWOBHM - 85%

Mungo, July 10th, 2007

For Angel Witch, releasing new material after the NWOBHM classic that was their self titled album was going to be difficult, as it would be extremely hard to live up to the standards set by it. However, this 3 track single and the following album proved Angel Witch still had it in them to write great Heavy Metal tunes.

Loser picks up where the self titled left off, with the first song being a textbook example of a great heavy metal song. The riffing remains fresh and the excellent soloing seen previously has been upheld on here. The second song, Suffer, continues in a similar vein. It is better than the previous track plainly due to it being more fun to listen to. The chorus is extremely catchy, and the riffs sounded like they could’ve been on the self titled. Once again we have some excellent soloing which is unfortunately a little on the short side before it returns to where the song was before. The last song, Dr. Phibes, is an instrumental which starts off with a simple drum beat before leading into atmospheric guitar riffing. At 1:12 there are some very Maiden-ish duel solos which continue until about 2 minutes in. It then leads out with a repetitive but effective guitar line.

To put it simply, this is another great release from Angel Witch. They are the best at what they do, and renowned as one of the leaders of the NWOBHM movement for a reason. You can get these songs on the reissue of the self titled album, so if you don’t have it already buy it and get this single as a bonus.
