Mystic Forest - Green Hell...

I knew this sounded like Eikenskaden... - 90%

KayTeeBee, January 7th, 2005

After I listened to this album for the first time, it reminded me a lot of Eikenskaden. Soon after that, I found out that the songwriter of Mystic Forest is Stefen of Eikenskaden - no wonder! Anyways, if want to know what I mean by Eikenskaden-sounding music, I mean black metal that has a huge classical influence, and that's absolutely melancholic. This band also uses a drum machine, but it fits the music well, like in Blut Aus Nord (but the music itself sounds nothing like Blut Aus Nord).

The difference between most black metal artists and Mystic Forest is that Stefen actually knows how to play is instruments. He's a god and both the piano and the guitar. The interludes/breaks in this album are among the best ones I've ever heard, being amazingly beautiful piano melodies. And they DO sound really hard to play. About the guitar riffs, those are amazing as well. They're not always "tremolo-core", they vary a lot, just take a listen to "Green Paradise" (which, I admit, has a bigger conventional black metal sound to it), or "Shadows". The vocals are also unique as hell. I don't know what the fuck they did to the vocals, but they sound incredibly evil and haunting.

This album manages to be really evil and melancholic at the same time, thanks for the furious guitar riffs and the amazing piano breaks. A sensational album, get it if you want a black metal album that stands out of the crowd!
