Lust of Decay - Purity Through Dismemberment

Move on to 2007... This is the most Brutal of 2006 - 96%

MikeBelial, January 27th, 2006

What the fuck; I thought Lust of Decay would not be able to get any better than their last album “Kingdom of Corpses.” Certainly I thought they could equal that effort, but never outshine the level of sickness they had achieved. Yet, with the intensity of a virus that has mutated to surpass a vaccine, LOD viciously strike with their latest release, “Purity Through Dismemberment.” From the moment you put this disc into your player you know you are onto something vile enough to be tasteful. Each song is a semi-technical mix of crazed riffing, monster gurgling, bass bruising, and drum intensity created and enhanced by exceptional production that will leave the listener dangerously winded.

The only reasonable method for describing this album is in song order:

1. Exchanging Perversities- This is the perfect way to start the album. The song is fast as a fuck in an ally with a $20 hooker, but has enough tempo changes to make the experience pleasurable.

2. Scarification- If they are going to test for performance enhancing drugs in the Olympics and professional sports then they should consider testing in Brutal Death Metal; specifically Jordan Varela. Besides having an awesome groovy chug of a riff in this track that kicks in at the 16 second mark Varela’ drumming in crazy technical.

3. Intolerable Cruelty- I can just see Jay Barnes gargling a combination of glass, sand, and vodka before doing the vocals on this track. Then at 1:02 Steve Green crushes your skull with a mallet for a riff. I do not know if it was the intention, but this song was crafted perfectly for the mosh pit.

4. Licking Bacterial Ecstasy- Do I really need to describe a song that has a sample from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre with R. Lee Ermey? This track is fast, disturbing, brilliant and fatter than your old lady in 30 years.

5. When Anesthesia Fails- This track starts off a bit slower than the previous 4. Yet, it is heavy and brutal with an unrelenting groove that is displaced only for chugging stops and starts. What is really killer is the melodic solo that kicks in at about 1:21 giving the track a foreboding vibe without erasing any of its brutality.

6. Embryonic Breeding for Cannibalistic Devourment- This track is filled with a variety of riffage and slabs of bass that take the listener down one neck breaking road after the other… Pure hatred.

7. Raging Swarm- Maddening bass and lightening drums showcase this brutal assault. This is something a masochistic dentist would play while yanking teeth without first dosing the patient with pain killers.

8. Ejaculation Extermination- This could be my favorite song on the disc. It has quick stop-start riffing, Joe Payne’ bass dances all over your spine, and I’m positive that Barnes pukes on the microphone. The background vocals have a grinding style and Varela is a fucking beast of mastership behind the drum kit.

9. Purity Through Dismemberment- I was playing this with the windows down in the mall parking lot when I pulled into a vacant spot next to a nun who was getting out of her car. She paused long enough to get an earful of brutality then got back in her little shit-box of a vehicle and drove off in fear. Oh yeah, the song… This is a slab of LOD at their breakdown finest for 5 minutes, trust me.

Fellow metal fans this album is a must have for your collection. All the instruments are played at a high level and it is obvious that the skills of each person in the band resonate from member to member whether its Steve Green with his balls out guitar playing, Joe Payne thundering away at bass, Jay Barnes choking up internal organs while singing, or Jordan Varela getting upwards of 260 beats per minute with his feet on the double bass. These guys have put out a giant of a recording that is easily as good in musicianship and overall sound as anything by Deeds of Flesh, Psycroptic, or Disgorge (USA).
