Eisiger Wald - Sur le chemin de la délivrance

Eisiger Wald - Sur le chemin de la délivrance - 95%

IIO, March 10th, 2007

This is a little known band (comprised of just one person) that most certainly deserves recognition. Depressive black metal is rapidly gaining popularity because of bands such as Abyssic Hate, Beatrik, Anti, Nyktalgia and the like. Eisiger Wald fits in perfectly with the afore mentioned and contributes something special to this sub-genre.

Each song on this demo is slow, and offers something to set it apart from the other tracks. The songs often incorporate a slow, distorted guitar sound over an equally slow drum beat. The vocals are a burzum-like howl, fitting in perfectly with the music and creating a suitably haunting atmosphere. This demo obviously has minimalistic production, but I for one believe that's to its merit. Ma Lueur D'espoir in particular has a memorable opening riff, initially just a distorted guitar before the drums kick in, and subsequently the vocals - producing a truly memorable track. Acoustic interludes appear in a few songs, and are suitably interesting to keep the demo afloat. All throughout, a bleak, depressing atmosphere is maintained, right the way through to the beautifully mellow outro. I can even draw parallels between Eisiger Wald and Peste Noire, in regards to composition and pace of particular songs, though the primary comparison has to be between this and Nyktalgia. They both incorporate similar elements, yet both use those elements in compelling ways to produce equally as good music and contains enough originality to set each of them apart. I can highly recommend this to anyone who has an interest in the genre, and urge you to track this little gem down.

I for one, eagerly look forward to any other releases.
