Crestfallen - Secrets of Time

Impressive - 90%

nameless, May 5th, 2004

The sound on this album is a little on the raw side, but not the "recorded inside a tin can sound" some black metal bands take pride in having. Everything is heard pretty easily, with the drums being a little louder than the rest.

Musically this is a blend of genres. Mostly death and thrash, but not an all out assault. This is a pretty moderate tempo album. Riffing is mostly in the thrash style with lots of good lead and harmony work. There are some nice surprises to be found here. Female vocals chanting lyrics are heard at times and help provide an almost melancholic feel, violins also help at doing this. On the second track they are heard playing a nice sad sounding melody over some acoustic guitars(it sounds like something you might hear in the Chrono Cross videogame, hehe) very efective in my opinion.

Might be a little hard to find, but well worth getting for something different than your typical "melodic death".
