Sorry it took me so long to get this up....

27 valid lists were submitted. Many of the lists contained artists who were not labeled as Folk Metal (or had no mention of folk whatsoever) within the archives. In these cases I just omitted those individual album/artist submissions. There were three lists that were disaqualified. One for having more than three albums by the same artist, one for not having the full fifteen, and one because it came in after the deadline.

139 distinct albums were named, but 67 of these only had one vote, and thus I discarded them from the final list (just think of it like when someone makes a motion, it has to be seconded to be recognized... something like that). However, they are still listed later in the thread. So, only 72 albums are ranked and detailed here.

Again, although I'm fairly certain that the tallying of the individual lists was more or less accurate, I don't claim this to be a perfect tallying. So... all individual lists have been posted at the bottom of this thread just in case anyone wants to see them.

I know that many were unhappy with the way that I ran this survey, and for those people, I apologize. However, I stand by my choice, and I think that the result was a pretty solid list. One observation that I want to point out, merely because I find it odd, is that the top six albums are by groups that start with the same letter.

I'm quite glad for the results. Many of the albums which I consider to be the best are near the top of the list (including Ensiferum being first).

I just discovered Eluveitie a few weeks ago. And boy, am I glad I did. Their style is great. I should check out Equilibrium, as well.

It wasn't. Thyrfing was included in the individual lists at the end, but not in the overall results.

Don't agree with the top six or Finntroll being up so high, but apart from that it's fine. Actually, looking at my list now I realised that I kind of fucked up because I forgot to put Windir's Soknardalr and Arntor in there. Soknardalr especially should have been there.

Can I just ask, what in the world is "folk" about Vikingligr Veldi and Blood in Our Wells? Im glad the OP made the rules he did, otherwise the list would have ended up with lots of BM albums that have pretty much no folk influence.

Yes, you're right, there is no pure folk regarding the actual music. My vote was a mistake actually, I was thinking of Autumn Aurora (which has some folk at least the intro) when I typed Blood...haha. But even "Blood.." has a folk feel to it even though the aesthetics don't resemble the folk genre. So yes, this was a FOLK metal, so those bm bands have no place there.
I am also surprised that the majority of people voted shitty Ensiferum and Eluveitie . How can you not see the cheesiness in their music, it's like there, right in your face, and riffs and melodies are barely decent.
It should be self explanatory that this is just an opinion by the way.

I dont find the acoustic intro to Autumn Aurora folky, but the song "Sunwheel" does have a folk melody.



I guess its a case of widely known, commercialized crap winning over the hidden gems, which was bound to happen. A best folk metal album list without Kroda's Towards the Firmaments Verge of Life is simply atrocious. I probably should have voted, but most of the folk metal Ive heard is simply too shitty to vote for.

By the way, how in the world are Slough Feg folk metal? They have some slight folk metal influences on the old albums but there's NO WAY they're significant enough to be on this list I don't think. They're primarily a heavy/power metal band.

Tyr is actually more legitimately "folk" metal than most of the bands up there. Many of their songs are indeed old folk songs 're-invented' to metal, rather than the usual power metal with accordions and flutes.

Ensiferum is far from being commercialised, they're well-known because they're an incredibly talented band. And they deserve their place at the very top. Kroda was represented too with their best album, Fimbulvinter.

It's a fairly solid list. Personally, I'm of the opinion that Primordial deserve a higher spot, but I can't complain. This is also a good excuse to go get my hands on more Finntroll albums too, I suppose.

Oh man. Eluveite should not be so high on the list. It's just goddamn folk instruments placed upon chuggachug's and the occasional gothenburg cheesy fuck riff, going by their latest album at least. It's like if Waking the Cadaver was in the top five grindcore list. Sure, it's related, kind of. Got blastbeats and well, heavy guitars, but that's about as far as the comparison goes. Similar with Eluveitie, but replace that with folk instruments and folk metal cheese. It's fucking rammstein with pan pipes .

This list is pretty damn bad.
The simple fact that no Skyclad is in the list is proof enough. I mean I thought they would have at least one album in the top five, and they end up with nothing. Instead some albums for Equilibrium take the spot ? That and not counting albums for Thyrfing and Einherjer and such hurt the list because they are more folk than viking when compared to Windir or even Temnozor to to an extent( which was accepted in the list).

I actually made a list mainly of Windir, Skyclad, Manegarm and Falkenbach and had a Die Apkalyptischen Reiter album in there too but didn't submit it because I felt the last five on the list could change if I hear more folk albums.
