I'd like to propose a feature for the archives.

Many bands on here have albums/demoes that are either very rare or too obscure to find a place to listen on the internet.

One idea is for these releases to have short samples of songs, so people can hear what they sounded like.

The samples would not be thee whole song, perhaps 15 second samples. They could be uploaded by someone who has the songs.

Two problems with this:

1.) would be hard to do,

2.) would take up server bandwidth

Is this a good idea?

That is pretty much what Vibrations of Doom is for.

Short answer: No.

It's been discussed many times already, and there's a pile of reasons why not, bandwidth and copyrights being the top two. It does not really serve an encyclopaedic purpose, and I also think verifying the samples are what they claim to be is difficult.

I don't believe this will happen.

Also, where would you draw the line between obscure and known? It'd create a rift between everyone in the metal community, debating whether X band should or should not have samples (although, I guess by debating it, they're suddenly well-known and should not have samples :P).

While I'd like to see such a thing (no denying it would be cool), there is MySpace and millions of blogs, and you've either got to do it for all or for none.

Doin that would burden the already stretched workload of the servers. There is already so much maintenance already and you can imagine how much more of a nightmare it would be to maintain them with that. Even a company as big as News Corp. has regular stoppages with it's MySpace maintenance.
