One of my interests outside of music is reading, and looking at architecture. It’s a fascinating area. Lately I’ve been looking at a lot of really awesome shit online, and figured I might as well start a thread discussing favourite buildings, structures, architectural movements etc. on metal archives.

A couple of my favourite architectural movements are the Scottish Baronial movement, the neo-château movement (primarily Canadian), and of course – the art deco movement.
Here’s a couple of examples of the styles mentioned:

Balmoral Castle (Scottish Baronial)
Image
Looks like something King Diamond would live in. I love the faux-military architecture of this period. Imagine the pompous parties and shit that have gone down here.

Banff Springs Hotel (Scottish Baronial)
Image
This thing makes a much scarier Rocky Mountain hotel than the one in The Shining. The interior is grandiose too.

Château Frontenac (châteauesque)
Image
One of many brilliant Canadian Railway Hotels. This Splendorous example combine’s the influence of traditional French chateux design with updated inputs.

Buffalo City Hall (art deco)
Image
This imposing building looks like it’s straight outta some old film noir, and with it’s scary, detailed tower is on some Gotham City tip.

Feel free to discuss your favourite (or least favorite) buildings/styles and post pics (keep them to a reasonable size please). Have any sweet buildings in your city, or ones you hate?

yeah i've always enjoyed that shit too. i especially like the massive red brick walls of red square. They are featured prominently in Tom Clancy's neo Cold War classic "Ghost Recon".

that was the best pic i could find that wasn't too big. Very beautiful stuff.

i've always thought this building was pretty unique. General Electric Building. Built in the 1930s, the awesome sculputural art deco style is pretty unique while being pretty imposing and powerful.

Man the ceiling on that General Electric building sure has a evil corporation vibe to it.
It is actually very weird to see something so peculiar on a big, corporate building, especially in the 1930's.

This is the Mosteiro da Batalha here in Portugal, it's a perfect example of the Gothic period here.
I really like how it's got an imposing stature and yet a lot of attention to detail.

As a person who is studying Quantity Surveying, I do love buildings though my job is actually to calculate the actual cost of buildings/tendering.

Some of my favorite buildings are:

KLCC aka Petronas Twin Towers

Air Force Academy Chapel

St Basil's

The Parthenon

Great pics but please keep the sizes down. The mods don't like it.

Another Canadian Railway Hotels post:

The Château Laurier, Ottawa. Built 1912. These neochataeu buildings are some of my favourite. Most of 'em have pretty interesting tales of "hauntings" to go along with their castle-like appearance, and rich histories - with the above-mentioned Banff Springs Hotel having a whole bunch of "haunting" tales.

There was another thread about a year ago with the same topic, not sure if it's been locked but there were some fantastic pictures in there if you wanted.

i am fascinated by anything that is built in Dubai, that place just looks incredible. i love those high tech looking cities like Shanghai and Dubai, they look like places right out of a Ghost in the Shell episode. i also love historic architecture as well. i took many photos of such while i was in Italy/Greece, including all the well known stuff like the Colosseum, Pantheon, Parthenon that everyone's seen, and a few that were a bit more interesting looking.
