Mayhem's Hellhammer is by far my favourite metal drummer ever. His chaotic style on both Ordo Ad Chao and De mysteriis... is just incredible. I was wondering if there is ant other music where the drumming is like this? I don't really mind which genre, I'm quite open minded to different metal genres. Thanks in advance

Almost all Black Metal drummers sound exactly the same. All they do is pound on the drums for like 4 minutes straight. There's no other drummers in black metal that stick out, other than Hellhammer or Frost from Satyricon, so I guess check him out.

Hellhammer? Bah. Watch Johnny Long show you how it's done. (Disclaimer - Not black metal material)

(Kidding. Hellhammer's impressive too.)

I always liked the drumming on Dark Angel's 'Darkness Descends'; Gene Hoglan was probably the first uber-noteworthy drummer in metal.

And it was no coincidence that once he left Cradle Of Filth they started releasing rubbish

Err...Barker had great triggered drum tones on those first few Cradle albums, but live he sounded like almost all triggered drummers - shite.

But yeah, he is a solid drummer...as is Proscriptor.

My two faves are probably both Faust and Trym, both in and out of Emperor. I prefer the really early Faust and Mortiis era stuff, but still like and listen to everything - even "Prometheus"; really dig the Scum project he did too. Trym kills it on that live Emperor DVD, and of course the old Enslaved stuff too.

Inferno from Behemoth has a similar aproach to what Hellhammer did on "Grand Declaration" for example. Very fast, mechanical and militaristic feel. It doesn't sound like him, because no one does, but he's the first one that i could think of.

Try Frost (uk), their debut album "Cursed Again" is total De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas worship, right down to a very similar drum sound.
